Soylent Green (1973)

Official Movie Poster
Spoiler Alert: Soylent Green is made of people! Soylent Industries is grinding up the corpses of our neighbors and loved ones and feeding them to us in green, food-cube form! Having said all that, the whole ordeal still seems more ethical and respectable than the shenanigans you hear about from Monsanto.

Good features were better than expected. Bad features were awful, yet still enjoyable. Abortions were utter torment to sit through.

  1. Okay, This is a phenomenal flick set in the dystopian future, and it was cool when it was released. I sense that Anthony is thinking that this is an "abortion" but he's wrong. It's a great film from "that era." It's not a bad B or C movie like he and others might be thinking. It was rockin' when it was released!

Personal comment to Anthony: I know you think it's "funny" mentioning "Homos." But you know what? I'm a homo, my partner of eight years is a "homo" and he could pound your ass into the ground. Stop going down the homo road and you'll continue to be interesting. I know it seems to be easy fodder for your commentary, but it was a low-class comment. Knock that shit off and know that even gay guys like me can relate to this flick. It's the 21st century man - you're surrounded by "homos." Goddamn, I had hoped you guys wouldn't go down this road, given how long I've worked with Brad. I'm disappointed. Really disappointed.

    1. Sean,

I'm a huge fan of this film, and believe it deserves a GOOD rating, 100%. Admittedly, I may have strong-armed Anthony into agreeing this was a "good" film, also... but I doubt he ever thought it was an "abortion". Without my influence, he might have said "bad" AT WORST. That's why we discuss our ratings at the end of the show (and try to come to some consensus).

As for the "homo" comment, it should be noted that Anthony is also gay. I even believe I asked him at one point during this particular podcast, "as a gay man, do you find Charlton Heston attractive". ;) Spoiler alert, his answer was "no."

    2. Mr. Cowen,

Thank you for commenting on our show. We encourage it. In your comment you stated "Stop going down the homo road and you'll continue to be interesting. TortureVision's goal is to be an “equal opportunity offender.” Personally I reject the notion of being politically correct during our podcast which is comedic in nature and often the tool of satire. As Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the creators of South Park, state that “no particular topic or group of people will be spared the expense of being subject to mockery and satire, out of fairness to any person or group of people who have been ridiculed before” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Park_controversies). I wholeheartedly agree with this view.

Consequently, I apologize only that this perspective was not apparent to you going into our podcasts. I hope you don't condone the other prejudiced jokes, towards various groups and individuals we made fun of, during our Leprechaun episode. A show you commented on previously where we had distasteful jokes on the mentally challenged, Indian women, and Leprechaun folklore, to name a few. In that episode you said we were "hilarious and spot-on all the way to the end."

As a fellow gay man, legally married I might add, know the importance of the civil rights movement and am sensitive to the topic. I could not take it any more seriously. You can read a more serious side of my perspective here:

You also stated "I'm a homo, my partner of eight years is a 'homo' and he could pound your ass into the ground." Thank you but if I wasn't married I would totally take you up on the offer. ;-)

      Sincerely,
      Anthony Dynar
